China's crane exports increased by 25% year-on-year: Southeast Asia and the Middle East have become the main incremental markets
2025-07-14 14:12:54

Against the backdrop of the global infrastructure investment focus shifting eastward and the in-depth advancement of the "Belt and Road" initiative, China's Crane Manufacturers industry is writing a new chapter of growth in overseas markets with technological innovation and market penetration as dual engines. Data from the first half of 2025 showed that China's crane exports increased by 25% year-on-year, of which Southeast Asia and the Middle East contributed more than 60% of the increase, becoming the core fulcrum of the industry's global layout.

Southeast Asia: The export destination of the "China Solution" under the infrastructure frenzy

With the RCEP policy dividends and the acceleration of regional economic integration, Southeast Asia is setting off a new round of infrastructure investment boom. Landmark projects such as the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway in Indonesia, the China-Laos Railway, and the East Coast Railway in Malaysia continue to advance, driving the explosive growth in crane demand. According to industry statistics, from January to May 2025, China's crane exports to six Southeast Asian countries (Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore) reached US$1.87 billion, a year-on-year increase of 31%, of which crawler cranes and tower cranes accounted for more than 65%.

Technical adaptability has become the key to breaking the deadlock. In response to the hot and humid environment of the Southeast Asian rainforest, the Chinese engineering team developed a crane with 1600MPa high-strength steel and a three-level sealing design. The weight of the whole machine was reduced by 15% while the load-bearing capacity was increased by 20%. In the Indonesian nickel mine project, this model achieved 3,000 consecutive hours of trouble-free operation, significantly reducing maintenance costs. In addition, modular design has become another major breakthrough point - the 160-ton crane developed by a certain company has a boom that can be disassembled into 8 standard containers for transportation, and the on-site assembly time is 60% shorter than that of traditional equipment. It successfully won the bid for the largest photovoltaic park hoisting project in Vietnam.

Localized production accelerates market penetration. The overseas factory established by Chinese companies in Bekasi, Indonesia, has achieved localized production of 90% of tower crane parts, and the supporting "4-hour emergency response circle" covers the entire island, and the spare parts inventory turnover efficiency has increased by 300%. In May 2025, the first locally assembled 251V truck crane rolled off the production line of the factory, with a price 18% lower than that of imported models, and defeated international brands in the bidding for municipal engineering in Jakarta, with a market share jumping to 34%.

Middle East: Energy transformation has spawned a new blue ocean for high-end equipment

The Middle East region is undergoing a strategic transformation from "oil economy" to "infrastructure-driven". National strategies such as Saudi Arabia's "Vision 2030" and the UAE's "Industry 4.0" have promoted regional infrastructure investment to exceed US$100 billion. In 2025, the scale of the Middle East construction machinery market will reach US$16 billion, of which cranes account for 25%, and Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar will contribute more than 60% of the demand.

New energy technology opens up the high-end market. In the new energy equipment demonstration area of Dubai Expo Park, the electric tire Gantry Crane made in China achieves 24-hour zero-emission operation, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 42 tons per unit per year, and reducing operating costs by 58% compared with diesel models. Hydrogen fuel cell technology has also made breakthroughs - a hydrogen crawler crane developed by a certain company has achieved a low-temperature start of -30℃ in the construction of Saudi Arabia's NEOM new city, with a cruising range of over 1,000 kilometers, filling the technical gap of new energy lifting equipment in extreme environments around the world.

Intelligent solutions reshape the competitive landscape. For the UAE subway project, the digital twin construction platform built by the Chinese team uses 5G+AI technology to achieve collaborative operation of 8 unmanned cranes, shortening the construction period by 40% and achieving a fault prediction accuracy of 92%. In the construction of the Qatar World Cup venues, the intelligent operation and maintenance system monitors 2,000 sensor data in real time, and the comprehensive utilization rate of equipment has increased to 85%, an increase of 32 percentage points over the traditional model.

Geographical advantages have been transformed into market advantages. The localization rate of Chinese companies in the Middle East market has exceeded 40%. The localization rate of core components of the 15,000 tower cranes produced by a certain company has reached 65%, but through the adaptation of Middle East standard certification, it has successfully entered the Saudi Future City (NEOM) supply chain system. In June 2025, the company established a joint venture with the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, planning to invest $1 billion in the next five years to build a new energy engineering machinery R&D center, focusing on the hydrogen power system of 1,000-ton all-terrain cranes.

Technology + Ecology: Building a New Paradigm of Global Competition

The overseas strategy of Chinese crane companies is upgrading from "product output" to "technology + ecology" comprehensive services. In the field of 5G communications, a 5G all-terrain crane developed by a certain company has achieved real-time operation 200 kilometers away, with a response delay of less than 0.1 seconds. After the technology passed the Middle East certification, it quickly obtained an order for the construction of a nuclear power plant in the UAE. In terms of service model innovation, the "Crane as a Service" (LaaS) model has been successfully piloted in the Southeast Asian market. Customers pay according to the lifting tonnage, and the company is responsible for the full life cycle management. This model reduces the equipment use cost of small and medium-sized customers by 40%, and the adoption rate in the Indonesian market exceeded 28% in the second quarter of 2025.

At the supply chain level, the vertical integration capabilities of Chinese companies continue to strengthen. The variable pump for 1,000-ton cranes independently developed by a certain enterprise has broken the foreign technology monopoly. Its price is 35% lower than that of imported products and has been matched with export models. In the field of materials science, the application of 1,600MPa ultra-high-strength steel has reduced the weight of crane booms by 25%. The application of this material on the 2,600-type all-terrain crane has pushed the maximum lifting weight of Chinese cranes to exceed 2,000 tons, reaching the international leading level.

Challenges and opportunities coexist: a breakthrough in the deep waters of globalization

Although the export situation is improving, geopolitical risks and trade barriers remain the main challenges. In 2025, the US upgraded its "safety review" of Chinese cranes, resulting in a 17% decline in orders from Chinese companies in the North American market. In response, the industry jointly established a "Technical Compliance Alliance" and, through mutual recognition of international certification standards such as the EU CE and the US ASME, added 23 certification qualifications for the Middle East and Southeast Asian markets in the first half of 2025, effectively resolving the impact of trade barriers.

Looking ahead, with the deep integration of the RCEP regional value chain and the outbreak of new energy infrastructure in the Middle East, China's crane exports are expected to maintain an average annual growth rate of more than 15%. It is predicted that by 2030, the overseas revenue share of Chinese cranes will exceed 60%, of which Southeast Asia and the Middle East will contribute more than 50%. In this global competition of infrastructure equipment, Chinese cranes are using technological innovation as a spear and localized ecology as a shield to write a new chapter of leapfrog development from "Made in China" to "Chinese Brand".
